Me & My Old Man presents
You’ll remember that this year happened.
You won’t remember
what it felt like.
Snapshot keeps it, for you and for the kids who’ll one day ask.
I’ve spent hundreds of hours listening to people in their sixties, seventies and eighties talk about their lives.
And hundreds more with their children. People my age, in their forties and fifties, telling me what they wish they knew. The first dog. The trip to Paris at thirteen. Why she chose him.
Somewhere in all those hours, a slightly uncomfortable thought turned up.
Maybe this is all a bit late.
Because by the time I’m sitting down with someone at seventy-five, the school run is fifty years ago. The summer they’d tell you was the best of their life has gone soft round the edges. They remember that it happened. They’ve lost what it felt like.
My dad died in 2021. I know roughly what he did in his forties. I have no idea what it felt like to be him.
So here’s the thought. What if we didn’t wait?
What if you sat down now, right in the middle of it. The rushing about after small children. The school decision you’re lying awake over. The best afternoon of your summer. The thing you noticed in your seven-year-old last week. How it actually felt, dropping them at the gate on the first day, and driving off.
Right now that’s just Tuesday. In thirty years it’s the bit you’d give anything to get back.
The experience
What you get.
Before
A reflection guide, so you arrive with more than ‘erm, work’s been busy’.
Together
A 1h30 recorded interview, online. I ask, you talk, nobody interrupts.
One week later
An edited recording of around 60 minutes.
To keep
A handful of short video clips — yours to reflect on, for your kids one day, or to share with your partner.
Your hour and a half
What we might talk about.
This year, exactly as it is. The school run, the work, the tiredness, the good bits.
The day that changed things. A birth, a move, a first day, a last one.
Being ten. Being fifteen. The version of you your kids have never met.
What you’re noticing in the people you love right now.
Anything, really. It’s your story. I just ask good questions.
What it isn’t.
Not coaching. Not therapy. Nothing to fix and no homework afterwards. Just space, and your stories.
Who I am.
I’m Neil. Since 2024 I’ve recorded 380 hours of interviews with 37 families, mostly parents in their seventies and eighties telling their life story in their own voice. They get to hear their own life handed back to them. Their children and grandchildren get to keep it.
Snapshot is what those hours taught me: don’t wait until you’re seventy-five.
What are we, if not a collection of stories?
And what a shame it would be to let them slip by.
